Planning

Best Time to Go on Safari in Tanzania

Tanzania rewards travellers all year, but the experience changes month by month. The right timing depends on whether you are chasing the migration, hoping for fewer vehicles, or travelling with children during school holidays.

Dry season: June to October

This is the classic safari window. Vegetation thins, water sources shrink and wildlife concentrates along rivers and waterholes, which makes game viewing consistently excellent across Tarangire, the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater.

It is also the busiest and most expensive period, so lodges and camps should be secured well in advance.

Green season: November to May

Short rains arrive around November, and longer rains fall roughly from late March into May. Landscapes turn green, birdlife is spectacular and rates are generally lower.

January to March is outstanding in the southern Serengeti, when wildebeest gather to calve and predator activity peaks.

Choosing your month

For river crossings, aim for roughly July to September. For calving, plan around February. For fewer vehicles with strong game viewing, consider June or late October.
