Wildebeest crossing a river during the Great Migration

Great Migration Safari Guide

The Great Migration is not an event with a fixed date — it is a continuous cycle of more than a million wildebeest, joined by zebra and gazelle, moving through the Serengeti and Maasai Mara ecosystem in search of grazing.

Calving season

Herds gather on the short-grass plains of the southern Serengeti and Ndutu, usually between January and March, when large numbers of calves are born and predator activity is intense.

River crossing season

From around July to September the herds face the Grumeti and Mara rivers. Crossings are unpredictable, dramatic and require patience and a good guide.

Tanzania or Kenya?

Tanzania offers the largest share of the year, including calving and the western corridor. Kenya's Maasai Mara is the classic destination for the July to October crossings.

How long you need

Allow at least three nights in the right sector, and ideally more, since crossings cannot be scheduled.
