Ngorongoro Crater Safari Guide

The Ngorongoro Crater is a collapsed caldera roughly twenty kilometres across, and its enclosed grassland, forest and lake support an exceptional density of wildlife within a compact area.

What you will see

Lion, elephant, buffalo, hyena, flamingo and one of the better chances in East Africa of seeing black rhino.

Timing your descent

Early morning descents are best for light, activity and a quieter crater floor. Most itineraries allow around half a day inside the crater.

How it fits your safari

The crater pairs naturally with Tarangire on short safaris and forms the final highlight of most northern circuit routes.
